PMZ比例调压阀在液压系统中以其可变的控制压力和较少的油量控制着其它液压元件（例如：换向阀）。 位于 A 接口的、符合电动控制所调节的次级压力不取决于初级回路中泵的现有压力，PMZ比例调压阀而在 A 接口的降低压力与电流输入信号之间存在线性关系。 PMZ比例调压阀由于结构所决定，现有的泄漏油流量必须通过 R 接口无压力地回流油箱。 例如当次级压力通过外力作用时上升超过设置值时，此种调压阀具有过载平衡功能（起到溢流阀作用）。
